TMD Treatment

Want to banish your head, neck and shoulder pain for good?

Many patients have head neck and shoulder pain that they have lived with for years and get regular treatment for but are actually only treating the symptoms rather than the cause. What we have seen over the years is that many of these people also have pain in their jaws. Some are aware of this pain whereas others just notice a clicking joint or a limited jaw opening.

What is TMD?

This often can be associated with an inflamed TMJ (temperomandibular joint) and is referred to as TMD (temperomandibular dysfunction). This TMD condition can be either short term (acute) or long term (chronic) in nature. Patients with TMD often report:

  • Poor sleep
  • Constant tiredness
  • Irritable stomachs
  • Highly sensitive immune systems
  • Pain behind the eyes and or neck and shoulders
  • Possible poor concentration and anxiety and depression to name a few.

Why is treatment so important?

The effect of TMD is that if the jaw is inflamed and out of position, the neck position is also effected which has a domino effect on the rest of the body resulting in poor posture and further structural problems. Only by treating the origin of the pain can we relieve those associated symptoms.

Treatment options…

Treatment of the inflamed jaws includes the use of orthotics (day and night varieties), physical therapies and exercise as well as correct nutrition and medication where essential. Having a clear airway (nose and sinuses) also has a dramatic effect and posture and TMD with the same postural disturbances.

We work closely with other physical therapists (eg chiropractors, physiotherapists and podiatrists) and specialists e.g. ENT (Ears, Nose and Throat) surgeons to identify and treat these underlying causes. At Dentist Melbourne we have invested in an I-CAT which is a Cone beam 3-D Imaging system to help identify soft and hard tissue changes right here at our practice, so we are able to and treat these issues.
